As it stands, the United States is the most obese country in the world. In recent statistics, studies suggest that a whopping 72 percent of men are overweight, and an alarming 64 percent of women are also in the exact same boat. Sadly, children have not escaped this ever-growing trend, with the percentages resting at 9.5 for infants and toddlers, and 16.9 for the age range from 2-19 years old. Compounded, this becomes a recipe for disaster, or a heart attack.
The Internet has brought us the ability to perform online banking and to virtually shop till we drop online. Technology has evolved so much that we barely need to even venture outside of our homes. The Internet also has the ability to inform us of all the great benefits of exercising, although many of us would rather hang out with our friends on Facebook, than meet up for a pick-up game of basketball at the park.
As television has soared to new heights in ratings, leaving us with the unparalleled fear of not making it home in time to catch our favorite shows. Consoles such as the beloved PlayStation 3 deliver tag lines on commercials like,"PS3; it only does everything." Everything? Really? I even bought one for myself off Amazon with the hopes that it would make me breakfast in the morning.
Our lifestyles lead us to believe that we are just too busy to do anything about our weight. We do not have time to cook food that is better for us or take the time to jog in the park.
The good news is that you do not have to let technology keep you sitting on your butt all day long. If you are one of the aforementioned victims, afflicted by the plaguing urge to negate good judgment then please, abandon your bon bons, leave the safety of your couch, and join us in fighting the legions of excess baggage.
These days there aren't a lot of people that have deep enough pockets to join the gym or hire their own buffed-up personal trainer. But there are less expensive possibilities. Get your own healthy crew rounded up to walk together a couple of evenings per week or take the time to throw the football with a couple of friends. Anytime you get the heart pumping, you are burning calories. The more calories you burn, the more you say "goodbye" to the spare tire and muffin-top.
The donuts belong on the counter, and the spare tires in the trunk, not on your hips and thighs. Don't waste money on expensive, useless gimmicks and fads to achieve the benefits of exercising. You will only see effective results if you work at it. The only equipment you need is your body and a healthy outlook.
Do what you feel is right and empower yourself. You will feel better all-around and when you feel stronger and in control of your life, everything else will start to look up too. If all else fails, do it to avoid being the person that has to say, "I got these hips from my mother."
