Intro
Split is a big city located in Central Dalmatia. It is the oldest and largest town in Dalmatia. Split has an ideal climate and is home to many successful sportspeople. Split is a very popular tourist destination, and it hosts thousands of visitors every year. The most popular establishment is Hajduk Split football Club. It has over 200,000 inhabitants and Croats account for 96% of the total population. A big number of the residents are Roman Catholics.
Best time to visit Split
It is important to understand the climate of Split to choose the perfect time for visiting. Winters in Spit are mild temperatures being above 0 degrees Celsius. Winter are the wettest of the seasons but snow is not common. So much snow was witnessed back in 2012 which caused a major traffic snarl up. Split has 2600 hours of sunshine every year. Summers are hot and moderately dry with July being the hottest and driest month of the year where temperatures can go as high as 30 degrees Celsius. January, on the other hand, is the coldest month of the year with an average temperature of 5 degrees Celsius. The average annual rainfall is 820mm with November being the wettest month.
You can get to Split with a plane through the Split Airport located just 25 km from the city center. Airport transfer in Split will bring you from the terminal to the town in less than 15 minutes. Other means of getting to and around Split include trains, bus, boat and cruise ships, car rentals and bikes.
1. Visit the Diocletians Palace and Mausoleum
The palace is a historical center of Split built on the remains of this Roman Palace. Make sure you go to the basement of the castle to see excavated remains. The four great gates that include: the Golden Gate, the Silver Gate, the Iron Gate and the Bronze Gate.
2. Hike in the Marjan hills
Marjan's location is to the west of Split. It is an ideal place for taking long walks, evening and early morning jogs and riding bikes. Relieve your stress by climbing the 174 meters high hill and get a panoramic view of the city. Alpine climbers prefer the south cliffs.
3. Eat, Shop and Drink
The most famous local food is called Soparnik. It is a baked crepe-like dough having Swiss chards and onions. Risotto is the other popular food served with either black calamari or white scampi. Some of the food joints you should visit include Cetina, Kod Joze, Nostromo for seafood, Picaferaj, and Panchos. You can shop for clothes, fruits, and vegetables in the nearby Green Market or Konzum which is the largest supermarket chain in Croatia. You can also try the many Croatian sodas like Pipi and Orela, wines and beers.
4. Go sailing and explore the nearby islands
Get on board either a boat or yacht and go sailing, visiting famous and breathtaking islands like Brac, Hvar, Vis and Korcula (just to name a few). Did you know that Croatia has over 1000 islands? Yes, and the best of them can be found near Split, which makes it the perfect destination for sailing holidays. There are many local charter in Croatia where you can get a vessel and start exploring the islands. You can also swim, dive and sunbathe on the beach.
